Frequently Asked Questions

These are the most common questions we get asked about our apprenticeships, traineeships, training courses and workforce solutions.

Apprenticeships & traineeships

How do I apply for an apprenticeship or traineeship?

Applying for an apprenticeship or traineeship is easy. Once you’ve decided on the foundational skills you want to build, you can complete your application form where you state the occupation you’re interested in. Then, attach copies of your latest school reports, TAFE results, a resume and work references (if you have them). If you’re still at school, a parent or guardian will need to co-sign your application. Submit all this and you’re on your way.

What trade should I apply for?

This all depends on where you want your job to take you. If you’re not sure which career path would suit you best, contact us and speak with one of our career advisors. They can help you determine where your skills are best suited.

What happens once I submit my application?

When you submit your application our team will review it and put you on the list for an appropriate apprenticeship or traineeship. We’ll keep it on file for six months and refer to it when a position becomes available. If we think your application is suitable, we’ll invite you to be part of the selection process, where you’ll go through an aptitude test, personal interview and referee check.

When do vacancies occur?

This really depends on the employer and their industry – so it could be any time. A vacancy might pop up because a previous employee left, their current apprentice was moved into a full-time position, or an employer decides to grow their team.

However, once you’ve submitted your application, when a vacancy occurs you’ll be one of the first to know.

Why do I need to nominate my preferred trade?

Choosing a trade and a career path is a highly personal thing, and selecting an apprenticeship is a three- or four-year commitment. We can’t make the choice for you – you need to make a judgement for yourself about whether or not it’s right for you. And when applying, it’s up to you to demonstrate to us, and your potential employers, that you’re the right choice for a particular trade.

So, when you apply, show that you’ve done your homework. Demonstrate that you have knowledge of the field and potential career paths, and that you’re cut out to do it – this gives you the best chance of being selected for the position.

Do I need any previous work experience?

Having work experience isn’t a requirement. However, any prior work experience you do have gives you a better chance of landing your apprenticeship. This demonstrates that you’re serious about what you want to do, and you’ve already got some of the skills to get started.

How does the interview process work?

There are a few different steps to the interview process.

The first round of interviews are with our field officers, to determine who we put forward to interview for each role. This is your chance to tell us why you believe you’re the best person for the position and also allows you to find out a bit more about the position being advertised.

GetCareers will then provide your details to our clients, which we call Host Employers. They select the right applicants to interview.

You then go through an interview with the host employer, usually at their business premises, to determine your suitability for their role. This interview is your chance to convince them that you’re the best person for the position.

After this, you may also be asked to undertake a small amount of work experience to assist the employer in making a decision (this should be no more than five days).

What happens after I’m offered an Apprenticeship or Traineeship?

When you’re offered an apprenticeship or traineeship, congratulations – you’ve got the job!

Once you accept the position, you attend an induction (if you’re under 18, a parent or guardian must attend with you). This helps to teach you more about the company, and ensure that you’re fully aware of the role and your performance expectations, as well as your responsibilities under your apprenticeship/traineeship agreement, our company policies, Health & Safety regulations, and legal requirements.

The induction process will include:

  • A medical test
  • Occupational Health & Safety requirements
  • Administration details

Once you start, you’re given a three-month probation period. When you’ve completed that, you’re officially in the role.

Courses & Funding

What funding is available for courses?

Many of our programs are funded by the Department of Training and Workforce Development through ‘Jobs and Skills WA’.

The student tuition fees are indicative only and are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Additional fees may apply such as Student Service and Resource fees.

Until 31 December 2025 this course comes under the ‘Lower Fees, Local Skills’ initiative.
