If you’re looking for a job, it’s more than likely that you want to nail the interview and ace the test. It’s normal that you want to impress your would-be employer – but if you go too far, you may end up doing the wrong thing and come across as less than genuine.
Below are three common mistakes that should be avoided if you want to receive more job offers and increase the amount of money you earn.
Showing Up Late
Don’t leave things to chance: be 15 minutes early for your interview. Allow enough time for little things which may change your planned travel time, like the bus running late or traffic delays. Arriving late and flustered is not the best way to make a good first impression.
Talking Negatively
Don’t talk negatively about your last job or your former co-workers. Even if the criticism is deserved, the person talking negatively always looks worse than the person you’re talking about. If you have to talk about your previous employment, share what you have learned, be thankful for the growth and explain why your skills are excellent for the new job.
Talking Money
No matter how eager you are, don’t talk excessively about money. Talking about money during an interview is like talking about marriage on a first date! If they ask you about your salary requirements, let them know you are negotiable. At this stage it is always good to gain an idea of their salary range, but leave the hard negotiating to when you receive a job offer.
