What do Boilermakers and Welders do?

As engineering fabrication tradespeople, Boilermakers and Welders shape, join and repair metal parts for use in machinery, equipment, metal structures, and other metal products. They work in workshops, factories, marine fabrication and boat building yards, and a range of other industrial production and manufacturing environments.

From small scale projects to large industrial works, Boilermakers and Welders work with a range of different metals to create the materials that power other industries.

Beneficial Skills & Attributes

You will need:

  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and practical skills
  • A patient and methodical approach to your work
  • The ability to follow plans and directions precisely
  • Good fitness and stamina – you’ll be on your feet and moving around a lot

Key Job Expertise

You will learn how to:

  • Use and demonstrate arc, gas, MIG and TIG welding theory
  • Use and maintain a variety of different welding tools and methods
  • Lay out, cut and form metals to spec
  • Read and interpret blueprints, and carry out special processes
  • Properly check and confirm product or process quality before, during and after welding
  • Translate your skills across applications of any size

Education & Training Requirements

You’ll undertake a four-year apprenticeship, during which you’ll begin formal training with an employer, supplemented with training from a Registered Training Organisation, and spend your time working and learning practical skills on the job. When you finish, you’ll have a nationally recognised qualification you can take anywhere.

Delivery Location

As an apprentice, you will also complete off-site training at one of our locations or another RTO, depending on your individual circumstances.

Fees & Charges

This program is funded by the Department of Training and Workforce Development through ‘Jobs and Skills WA’.

The student tuition fees are indicative only and are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Additional fees may apply such as Student Service and Resource fees.

Until 31 December 2025 this course comes under the Lower Fees, Local Skills Initiative.

This means the course tuition fees have been cut in half!
